Detox Your Diet and Home

The concept of a “detox” in alternative medicine is all about removing harmful influences from your immediate environment so that built-up “toxins” have a chance to be purged.

While most mainstream science and the medical establishment is well and truly against anything of the sort, their criticism of detoxification processes can become irrelevant at times.

It also doesn’t help that opposing groups end up talking about completely different things half the time. The simple fact is, when a proponent of alternate medicine is talking about “detox” what they really mean is “making changes in your diet and home that will make you healthier and, by extension, less full of unhealthy elements.”

It really is that simple. If you want to become healthier, then you can make significant changes to your diet and your home to reduce the harmful influences around you.

Detoxing Your Diet

There are many ways in which you can encourage or speed up this process through the use of raw herbs, supplements, extracts and a range of methods.

Before you can fix your diet, however, you need to find out what about your current diet is unhealthy. Most nutrition science shows that we should be eating a healthy mix of proteins, fats and carbohydrates.

Protein and fat should be from healthy animal or plant sources, while carbohydrates should be full of fiber and low in sugar (vegetables rather than fruits). Fruit, sugar, honey and refined carbohydrates (bread, pasta, wheat, beer) should be eaten in moderation. Make sure you’re getting all your essential amino acids and oils, too.

There’s simply no way to broadly diagnose what a “healthy” diet is. A lot will depend on what you are already eating and what you are missing out on or getting too much of. For example, in recent years, the idea that “fat makes you fat” has gained less traction and people are now looking at “good fats vs. bad fats.”

Detoxing Your Home

A sound body is not just dependent on a healthy diet, but also upon healthy living conditions.

This process is twofold – first, it requires identifying and getting rid of sources of toxicity in the home. Second, it means creating the type of immediate environment around you which is conducive to good health.

Is your home full of chemically toxic cleaning agents? Get rid of them and replace them with natural and organic cleansers. Is the air in your house full of dust, germs and contaminants? Perhaps it is time to replace air filters, invest in a good duct cleaning, change mattresses, deep clean the carpets and remove objects that are dust-traps.

Once that’s accomplished, consider the possible benefits of getting a humidifier, adding some live plants or purchasing furnishings or storage units that reduce the number of surfaces that can be contaminated. Hiring a monthly cleaning service is an option, too.
