After making the decision to work towards the goal of losing weight, the next step that you need to take is getting a proper workout and diet plan in order.

When most people think about a fat loss workout plan, the first thing that comes to mind is cardio, cardio and more cardio.

Since cardio is for burning off calories—and that is what you must do to lose weight—it only makes sense that this is the form of exercise you should focus on.

But is that really the case? Let’s have a peek at why you might just want to consider strength training over cardio training instead.

Boost Your Metabolic Rate

The very first reason to turn to strength training is because it will have a far greater impact on your metabolic rate. While cardio will burn off calories as you do it, as soon as you stop, your metabolic rate returns right back to normal.

Weight training, however, is going to cause your metabolic rate to increase, allowing you to burn more calories for hours after the session is completed.

Since this influences your total daily calorie expenditure, this will go a very long way towards promoting optimal fat loss.

Preserve Lean Muscle Tissue

Second, weight lifting is going to help to preserve your lean muscle mass as well. The stimulus of strength training signals the body that it must maintain its lean muscle tissue, which is needed to perform its everyday tasks.

If you aren’t doing strength training, the body sees no reason to hold onto muscle mass. It will start to lose that over fat mass as you continue on with your low calorie diet plan.

Maintaining lean muscle further enhances your metabolic rate because this tissue has the greatest influence over how many calories your body burns while at rest.

Define Your Body

One other reason why strength training is a must in your workout program is because it will help to define your body.

Cardio training may help you achieve a smaller body overall, but you’ll just be a smaller version of your current self.

With weight training, you’ll be a completely new version of yourself—one that’s more defined and leaner.

So as you can clearly see, weight training is the optimal method of reducing body fat. If you want to really transform your body and have success with your weight loss plan, make sure you perform weight lifting exercises on a regular basis.
