Love handles may have a cute name, but for those who want to look their best around the midsection, they are anything but attractive.

Although it is not possible to target fat in a specific area of the body, you can use healthy eating and abdominal workouts to build muscle in the torso area and decrease the appearance of the extra cushions at your sides.

Weight Loss Plan

Your first step to getting rid of love handles is eating a calorie-controlled diet. Military.com recommends focusing on a diet that is rich in fruits and veggies, similar to the Paleo Diet, consuming at least five servings per day. Eat plenty of lean proteins, such as chicken, fish and turkey, to sate your hunger without adding excess fat and calories to your meals.

Further dietary suggestions from Shape Magazine to get rid of love handles include limiting the amount of alcohol you consume and eating at regular intervals. If you skip breakfast, it slows your metabolism and you’re also more likely to overeat later in the day.

Feel the Burn

Increase the time and intensity of your cardio workouts to get your body into maximum fat burning mode. Ideally, you should participate in cardio exercise most days of the week for a minimum of 30 to 45 minutes. High calorie-burning activities include skating, swimming, jogging, running, step aerobics, spinning and cardio dance.

Target the Abs

Working the muscles in the abs can give you a tight and toned appearance while also getting rid of the love handles. You should participate in ab workouts at least three times a week. Floor exercises are the most popular form of abdominal workouts and typically require no equipment. A few examples of exercises that work the ab muscles include crunches, reverse crunches, bicycles and hip rollers. You should aim to do at least three sets of each exercise and a minimum of 10 to 12 reps per set.

Once you follow a lifestyle of healthy eating, regular exercise and plenty of rest, you can kiss those love handles goodbye.
