Despite some of the advertising you might see on television, building a home gym doesn’t have to be expensive or complicated. Why, even a caveman can do it!
You can have a great workout with a reasonable amount of floor space and some basic equipment that allows you to do a variety of exercises. Some of the most important pieces of equipment aren’t particularly expensive or hard to find either.
Here are a few essential pieces that can take you a long way in developing your home fitness program.
- Dumbbells – The best thing about dumbbells is that they’re light, portable and you can adapt them to exercise just about all of your major muscle groups. Dumbbells do a better job of activating your support muscles than exercise machines and allow you to isolate one body part at a time. Here are some dumbbell exercises for a great whole-body workout.
- A Skipping Rope – It may be old school, but jumping rope is a great form of aerobic exercise. Not only that, the repeated jumping is a great way to strengthen your foot and calf muscles as well as their support structures. As an added bonus, it’s also a great calorie burner.
- A Chin-up Bar – Chin-up bars are cheap, they take up almost no space and, most importantly, they provide an upper body workout that is second to none. Chin-ups work the biceps, forearms and latissimus dorsi muscles that give men the V-Shaped back look. As an added bonus, keeping your body aligned properly while doing chin-ups or pull-ups also works the core muscles.
- A Box, Step or Bench – You’d be surprised how many exercises you can do with a box or step-up bench. Of course, you can do the standard step-ups for aerobic conditioning and leg strength, but you can also use the bench to change the angle of many exercises to work your muscles in a different way, too. For example, lunges done from a step add a degree of difficulty to the standard lunge. You can also do inclined/declined push-ups or tricep dips.
- An Exercise Ball – Exercise balls have rapidly grown in popularity over the last few years. They’re great because they add the element of instability to your workout, strengthening your core and other support muscles. Have a look at the variety of workout routines you can do with an exercise ball.
The key to fitness lies in the consistency of your training. Setting up your own home gym helps you be more consistent by making it simple and convenient to follow a workout program without ever leaving your home.
