Sexual disorders come in a wide variety of forms, and many are as old as “the act” itself.

People have always been fascinated by the concept of a nymphomaniac – a woman with such insatiable sexual urges that she will take any partner she can get her hands on.

What’s more, this characterization isn’t too far from the truth; many women fall into this category of psychosexual dysfunction. The male equivalent is “satyriasis,” and the condition for both sexes is called “hypersexuality.”

This behavior might be thought of as an exciting lifestyle choice, but the truth of the matter is that nymphomania is actually considered to be a form of addiction.

Causes and Symptoms

There have been numerous theories about what causes hypersexuality in either men or women, and brain chemistry may play a part, as the levels of neurotransmitters in these people are often elevated most of the time. It has also been found that lesions in certain parts of the brain can result in sex addiction.

While some may think that they can never get too much sex, like anything else, a surfeit soon proves to be harmful. Dedicated nymphomaniacs or satyrs become so addicted to their behavior that they not only endanger their health and safety, but cause problems at work and with family life. Among the symptoms of hypersexuality are:

  • Seeking numerous partners.
  • Constant self-stimulation
  • Exhibitionism
  • Suggestive, inappropriate speech
  • Engaging in prostitution, either as the prostitute or the client
  • Frustration and anger if not able to engage in sexual activity
  • Engaging in voyeuristic activities
  • Harassing others sexually

Like any other addiction, be it drugs, alcohol, or gambling, the sex addict will often need professional help to overcome the problem. As it is with other addictive behaviors, the longer hypersexuality goes on, the harder it will be to cure.

They Have Always Been Among Us

Hypersexuals have always been a part of society, and how they have been treated has varied from culture to culture. More advanced societies have generally tolerated hypersexuals, but whether they would be accepted to any degree in more primitive settings is problematic.

Overtly sexually promiscuous people would have represented a very destabilizing influence in a small community where cohesion was a large factor in survival. Although there is no way of knowing now, it is possible that some of the bog bodies found in various parts of Europe wound up there because of their tribally unacceptable activities.

Often considered to be a nymphomaniac, Catherine the Great of Russia (1729 – 1796) did indeed share her pleasures with a number of men. Her addiction became worse as she grew older, and perhaps she used sex as a way of reclaiming her youth.

However, it is unlikely that some of Catherine’s alleged sexual exploits ever happened, particularly those concerning bestiality. After a repressed early life married to one of the most sexually inept of men, Catherine only began to cat around after seven years of a completely sexless marriage, when the need for an heir to the Russian throne was needed – a practical consideration that proved a great excuse for serial adultery.
