Those who use CrossFit as a strength and conditioning program will want to complement their workout routines with this Paleo-friendly approach to nutrition.
Anyone familiar with the CrossFit fitness regimen will recognize that it’s a series of muscle-specific exercises utilizing free weights as well as your own body weight.
While developing lean muscles, respiratory endurance, balance and overall fitness, this intense program can also aid in weight loss.
To get the desired results, however, CrossFit training should be supplemented by the right eating habits and nutrition. Not surprisingly, the CrossFit diet shares a lot in common with the Paleo diet.
With regards to weight loss, the CrossFit diet recommends eating low calorie foods while engaging in a series of high-quality exercises to burn more than the total calorie intake.
The specific foods suggested by CrossFit include lean meat, eggs, fish, nuts, and lots of vegetables and fruits.
Going organic, of course, will bring the best results. Laying off processed foods and dairy products is required, too—again a very Paleo concept.
Practically anything you might consider “comfort” food has to go out the window. In fact, some might be tempted to summarize the CrossFit diet by saying, “If it tastes good, spit it out!”
Sugar-rich foods like sodas, candies and chocolates are forbidden, as are fatty meat, beans, rice, barley, corn and starches in general.
As for portions, the CrossFit diet strategy is as follows: consume 30 percent lean meat, 40 percent carbohydrates (low-glycemic) such as brown rice and sweet potatoes, and 30 percent monounsaturated fats found in some nuts, avocados, olive oil and peanut butter.
If you follow these guidelines, limit your calories and burn more than your intake, unwanted weight will come right off. Additional benefits include less risk of diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
Those who fear that meals times will become boring and uninspired can rely on the tons of great recipes using pork and beef, as well as a variety of desserts with a healthier twist.
Just look to Paleo diet recipes for some great references to tasty meals and more ways to make your CrossFit diet experience enjoyable.
